Microsoft is responsible for Windows' own native drivers. So I think it important to put the blame (if blame is the right word) where it belongs. What happens is Dell, ASUS and the others submit those updates to Microsoft to include them in WU. I get it, security is important and all that, but damn this is just scary to me.Īnd do you think Microsoft goes out to Dell and ASUS and 100s of other manufacturers and demands they provide updates for their 1000s of different products to include in WU? What if the laptop was running on battery and I decided to restart, not knowing a BIOS updated had been downloaded in the background? Then the next thing I know the computer is doing a BIOS flash running on battery, which is definitely not advised! Maybe there is a system to detect the computer is on battery and cancel the flash? But somehow I doubt it. It is scary to force a BIOS flash on the user with no way to opt out.

It finally POSTs to the Dell logo and boots normally.Īt first I thought it might be the Dell assistant thing that did it, but looking at the Windows Update history it was clearly pushed out through Windows Update. I knew to just leave it, but I wonder how many people would be impatient and hold the power button to kill the power. Which is an eternity for someone who has seen a BIOS update go bad in the past. The computer reboots, then just hangs at a blank black screen with the fan at 100% for about 3 minutes. When they are done, I reboot to finish the updated and am greeted with an automated BIOS update screen! I'm setting up a new Dell laptop and after getting booted into the desktop for the first time I connect to the internet and start installing Windows updates.

(The chip programming hardware won't arrive from China for at least a month.) If it doesn't work, I'll still have one working tablet. If it works, I'll have two working tablets and can just sell one on eBay to recoup some of my losses. I'll backup the BIOS on the working tablet (settings & all) to a file, then attempt to overwrite the Bios of my current disabled tablet using the procedure in the video (also having just purchased the necessary eeprom programmer on eBay for $10.) I bought a used working Insignia Flex Win-10 tablet identical to mine on eBay for $50. Using the method seen in this video, I am going to attempt to reflash the BIOS with a duplicate copy from a duplicate tablet. I already tried various methods to physically clear the bios settings based on information found scattered around the four corners of the Internet. It seems an open-heart surgery (hoping you can clear the BIOS settings) is the only way to go. Even if you were able to find an original (or replacement) BIOS, you won't be able to boot off USB in order to update the BIOS. So, if you've disabled USB interface, you've cut all means to communicate with it.
